Host Families

Best in Family offers you advice, follow-up and support during the whole process and throughout your experience as a host family:

  • 24 hour contact in case of emergency.
  • Regular follow-up contacts at the beginning, during and at the end of the stay to verify the adaptation of the coexistence.
  • Faced with possible problems of coexistence or others that are substantiated, a change of Au Pair can be requested, which will be carried out as diligently as possible.

The Au Pair program is a cultural exchange program and coexistence (living together) regulated by an international agreement, in which both parts au pair and family, must agree with the established conditions to ensure that the experience is enriching for all.

What can an Au Pair do for your family?

  • With our Au Pair program you will have the help you need to take care of your children, in the basic tasks of the home and you will enjoy your leisure time with the guarantee that your children will be well taken care of. In return, the au pair will receive accommodation, all meals and a weekly pay, always treating them as part of the family.
  • It is an excellent educational opportunity for your children that will open new possibilities for your future. Understanding the benefits of speaking other languages is the primary motivation to promote learning in a natural way.

What does it mean to be a host family?

  • The host family receives a young person from abroad “Au Pair” (can be a girl or a boy) in their home for a certain time.
The family offers accommodation, full board and weekly pocket money. The Au Pair will be part of the family during the time of their stay, therefore, he / she has the same rights and obligations as any other member of the family.
  • Host families should bear in mind that an Au Pair is not a domestic employee (it is not considered “work”). It is a remunerated activity, based on the personal commitment of the Au Pairs with their host families. In return, they have the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable experience and learn a foreign language.

Advantages of having an Au Pair

  • Childcare doesn´t have to be costly for your family! For a small weekly remuneration, accommodation and board of the Au Pair, your family will get someone who looks after your children, teaches them a language, helps with duties in the household and therefore increases your personal flexibility.
  • The Au Pair program offers you one of the easiest ways to enable your kids to learn or improve a language. It can be achieved during their daily activities even from home and in a fun, fast, efficient and natural way, without being too much effort. It is especially of great help for children who attend bilingual schools, as they receive extra help at home regarding homework etc.
  • You will have help and support in getting your children out of bed, dressing them, bring them to school, pick them up again, giving them their meals, supervising their homework etc.

An Au Pair is a great help during school holidays, when your children don´t assist classes, especially during the period of summer vacation from June to September. The Au Pair will take care of your children while you are at work, and you won´t have to think about any alternative solutions (summer camps, leave them with other family members etc.) Your Au Pair will entertain them, take them to the swimming pool or do other excursions, play at home practicing the language and so on. He or she will simply support you in your daily life with children.

You will be able to count on your Au Pair the moment you want to go out, go shopping, to the gym or the hair dresser. You can go out at night with your husband/wife without the need to find an external babysitter or bring the children to someone else´s place. You won´t have to move them from their bed, given that your Au Pair will take the place of babysitter anytime during the  week.

A flexible schedule that your family personalizes according to your needs and from the comfort of your own home. Your family will be able to follow your individual timetable which will be agreed with the Au Pairs working schedule. Whenever there is an unexpected incident, you will have a reliable person you can count on at any time. When the children cannot go to school for whatsoever reason, the Au Pair will take care of them. You won´t have to leave them to another family member, take a day off of work or pay for a babysitter.

Living together with a person from abroad will surely be an unforgettable experience for all the family, especially the children, who will discover other customs form another culture and benefit from getting to know a new person close to them and their family from early age on.

You will be able to count on a trustworthy person, who will look after your children. The kids can get to know him/her step by step from home, which is very convenient for gaining confidence and security.

The Au Pairs are usually people of high educational and cultural level with great interest in learning a new language and adapting to a new culture. At the same time they are young girls and boys with lots of energy and keen on spending fun time with your children. For them the Au Pair will be like a big brother or sister.

Carry out small household chores (Help keep the house clean and tidy, prepare breakfast and simple meals for the kids, set the table and pick it up, do the Laundry, make small purchases, ect.).

One or two nights a week you will look after the children (babysitting) when the parents are out for the evening.

Attention

The Au Pair responsibilities may vary depending on the necessities of the host family. However family and au-pair will always sign an Au-pair and family Agreement that will describe the tasks and responsibilities from each part.

We should not allow the au pair to communicate all the time in their native language, as much as they can during their working hours. We must understand that they come to learn a language and we must allow them also to practice with the family, otherwise cultural exchange does not occur.
  • Promote the Au Pair´s participation at a language course. The course runs by the Au Pair.
  • Public transport ticket. The families living in the outer suburbs or attached villages to bigger cities should pay their Au Pair the monthly ticket for public transport, if he/she needs to use this transport to move around and/or get to language school. (In Belgium It is not mandatory but recommended they do).
  • Pocket money. 450€ per month. Be willing to pay the Au Pair at least the minimum wage required in the country of stay: some families are willing to pay extra money for some more hours of work (Agency recommends respecting the program in its entirety); However, the payment of the Au Pair must not be in any way inferior to that established by the official program of the country of stay. If sick, weekly pocket money will continue to be paid until the Au Pair recovers.
  • If the Au Pair falls sick, the host-parents should take care of her/him as if she/he were part of the family. The pocket-money will still be paid during her/his illness, until she/he fully recovers.
  • Keep the Au Pair informed about the period of school holidays, given that this might change the Au Pair´s timetables (possibly more or different working hours). This can be recompensed through extra payment or free time.
  • Weekly hours of work. 20 hours a week, you should not work more than 4 hours a day + two nights of babysitting.
  • Offer weekly days off. 1 or ½ days free per week. At least one full weekend per month
  • Offer paid vacations. 2 weeks paid per year. For short periods (2 days a month).
  • Medical Insurance. European Health Card or private insurance paid for by the family.
  • Sign insurance related to traffic accidents in case the Au Pair is going to use a car.
  • Travel expenses. As a rule, it is the au pair who assumes the cost of the round trip, but in some cases the family pays the return trip.
  • Pick up the Au Pair at her destination the day she/he arrives (airport, train station…). If that´s not possible, you should make arrangements for her/him to be picked up by someone clearly identified on your behalf. Should the au pair have to take a taxi or any other public transport to get to her final destination, the family has to pay for all expenses.
  • Notify our agency as soon as possible if there are any problems while living with the family, so we can mediate and help the family as well as the Au Pair to find the best solution.

Important Points to Understand

As you know, on the Internet you can find many pages of contacts or Au Pairs agencies that do not charge families. However, you should keep in mind that if you do not pay anything, the agency you contacted or the page where you registered will not consider your client. If they have any problems during the stay with the au pair (if they need Au Pair pair relocation, advice …), they will not help because they are not going to spend time and effort for nothing. We will help you from the moment you contact us until the au pair stay ends.
